William Savory Bucklin 1851-1928

It is supposed the William Savery Bucklin's ancestors were involved in the Phylanx movement in New York State. William Savery Bucklin's career as a painter started when he was 11 years old, at which time he sold a painting to the poet E.C. Stedman.

William Savery studied at the Normal Art School in Boston and the Art Students League in New York City, which became one of the country's most important art schools. He was a member of the Art Students League; Greenwich Society of Artists, and the Professional League.

William Savery exhibited at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fire Arts, 1880-1881; Brooklyn Art Association, 1883-85; Boston Art Club; National Academy of Design, 18990; Art Institute of Chicago, 1891, 1894-96, 1901-03; 1913-14; and 1916.

William Savery Bucklin is listed in Currier's Price Guide to American Artists at Auction, 9th edition, page 138. It states his work has sold at prices from $100.00 to $2500.00.   William Savery is also listed in Who Was Who in American Art, Mallett's, and Davenport's Fine Art Guide.   Auction sales appear sometimes on askart.com

Some of William Savery Bucklin's works are reported --- in 1999 --- to be in the Library of Westminster, MA (mural painting), and the Unitarian Church in Fitchburg, MA.

The Smithsonian Museum Research Information System, as of Nov. 2000, lists four paintings by William Savery Bucklin, to wit: two paintings owned by Christie, Mason & Woods International, Inc, NY, NY, titled "After the Harvest" and "Robinwood Meadows, Evening"; (these were purchased at a Christi's auction and may have been for resale}; and two paintings with owner information restricted titled "Woodland Scene" and "Cows Grazing in Meadow"

Christine Svedeman has a painting by William Savery, other information restricted.

Steven Bookman has an interesting 8 feet long by 18 inches tall oil on canvas, which was left behind by previous owners in a hose in Teaneck, NJ. It is signed by William Savery Bucklin. Titled, "Shelbourne River", it depicts a forest river.

William Savery Bucklin Forest Stream paintingA dealer with the email address of oldcrow@todaylink.com , offered on ebay.com in April, 2001, a painting (oil on canvas) which is a depiction of a forest stream in mid Autumn. Marvelous color and brush work with deft use of the palette knife with heavy impasto. The painting exhibits elements of expressionism and the Barbizon school.  Size = 27 3/4" x 39 3/4" Signed lower right. 

Sotheby's auction house  offered on ebay.com in September,2002, a paintingBucklin woods scene watercolor 24x32 titled "Forest Stream" 23 1/2 X 31 1/2 inches, which may (or may not) have been this one which is the exact same size (although it does not seem to feature a "stream") --- fall wooded landscape watercolor and gouache on paper 14x20" overall with frame and matt 21x27".Signed lower right and dated Oct.4'05.
