the hope of making a difference in other people's lives. The feedback
we've already received from family, friends, and other early readers
encourages us that this book may indeed be doing just that. |

In Hospital and Camp, by Sophronia E. Bucklin, Philadelphia, J.E. Potter and Co., 1869.
|
Excerpt from
In Hospital and Camp: [In
Washington, D.C] “About the amputating tent lay large piles of human
flesh — legs, arms, feet and hands. The were strewn promiscuously about
....the stiffened members seeming to be clutching at our clothing....We
grew callous to the sight of blood...." |
A special word about
Sophronia Bucklin.
Many books about women's rights pioneers
mention her. Here own words are found best in her book "In Hospital and Camp"
It is a woman's
388 page record of her life as a nurse among the wounded in the Civil War.
Your local library can get it for you on interlibrary loan.
Do
not confuse this book with Harold Elk Straubing's book with the same
title, in which he only includes one excerpt from Sophronia's book
and adds material from other Civil War doctors and nurses.

The Civil War changed forever
the face of the nation, the nature of American politics, and the
daily lives of millions of people. Yet few of us understand how the war
transformed gender roles Divided Houses is the first book to address
this topic, showing how the themes of gender, class, and race interacted
to forge the beginnings of a new society. |

| Linda Bucklin is a writer,
champion tennis player, wife and mother of three. She is also the
daughter of the late Prentis Cobb Hale (1910-1996), a powerful retail
executive and entrepreneur who was based in San Francisco.
As Linda grew
up, her powerful father had great influence and both positive and
negative control over her life. With a sharp eye for detail, Linda Bucklin shows us an inside view into
the life of a privileged family. This book has important lessons for
different generations. |

here, is a link to a reprint of another book describing her life at their Newton home, "The Elms."
