In Hospital and Camp, by Sophronia E. Bucklin, Philadelphia, J.E. Potter and Co., 1869.

Excerpt from In Hospital and Camp:

[In Washington, D.C] “About the  amputating tent lay large piles of human flesh — legs, arms, feet and hands. The were strewn promiscuously about ....the stiffened members seeming to be clutching at our clothing....We grew callous to the sight of blood...."

A special word about Sophronia Bucklin.    Many books about women's rights pioneers mention her. Here own words are found best in her book "In Hospital and Camp" It is a woman's 388 page record of her life as a nurse among the wounded in the Civil War. Your local library can get it for you on interlibrary loan.

Do not confuse this book with Harold Elk Straubing's book with the same title, in which he only includes one excerpt from Sophronia's book and adds material from other Civil War doctors and nurses.

Divided Houses: Gender and the Civil War. Sophronia thought nurses should be paid, contrary to the establishment of the day.  Often in difficulty for her position on women's rights, Sophronia was a real pioneer in women's rights. One of those excellent books which mention her is Divided Houses -->>>

The Civil War changed forever the face of the nation, the nature of American politics,  and the daily lives of millions of people. Yet few of us understand how the war transformed gender roles  Divided Houses is the first book to address this topic, showing how the themes of gender, class, and race interacted to forge the beginnings of a new society.
