More of the Art Works by William Savery Bucklin
still existing at the start of the 21st
century.
This is Section 02 of our imagery pages of artist William Savery Bucklin's
paintings, drawings, and sketches.
On some of the images below on this page: clicking on them will bring up a
larger image for you to enjoy.
Will
Kent, an art collector with training in restoration says about his
Nasturtium painting (shown to the left): "The painting is approx 20" X 24" and it is signed in the lower
right "W.S.Bucklin, Oct. '92". It is a watercolor on paper and the colors are
vibrant in spite of its age. It is a still life of nasturtium in a vessel on a
table with a cloth. I purchased it in an old barn antique (more junk) shop in
Southern New Hampshire in 1982. It was in an original unattractive and damaged
frame, which I replaced some years back. Bucklin's artistry was very apparent,
although the shop had little information about it or him. The colors are more
vibrant than in the photo and the gray background in the photo is more of an off
white in the painting."
On some of the images below on this
page: clicking on them will bring up a larger image for you to enjoy.
On
the left is "Cottage by the Stream" a unique item -- a reverse painting on
convex glass, about 9x12 inches. Owner wishes to remain unknown.
On the right is an interesting winter scene held by Kristen
M. Thompson. His mother also has a William Savery Bucklin
painting, a lush green setting, as opposed to Kristen's winter landscape. Both
the winter and the summer
paintings are heavily damaged by humidity. Both paintings came from the estate
of Harry Rich Hale, formerly of Crescent City, FL.
To the right is a fall wooded landscape watercolor and gouache on paper
14x20" overall with frame and matt 21x27".Signed lower right and dated Oct.4'05.
Other information restricted by owner to not be made public. The
coloration style is not a typical W. S. Bucklin style.

September
Frost, Adirondacks, 22" x 29" gouache, was sold at auction in 2003.
Contribution of this image was by website reader. Other facts about the work are
not known by us.
Two images are of particular interest to those of us trying
to construct an
extended biography of William Savery Bucklin and to find out more
about his time spent with the Phalanx group in New Jersey. First, on the
right, is an oil painting titled "The Trail at Phalanx", approximately 29" x
14". It represents a great number of William's titled works that
suggest the wooded areas near the Phalanstery were of beloved interest to
him.
Second, below, is a pencil sketch
on paper. The pencils used were artist pencils. The paper is
stationary embossed with the words 'The Phalanx Red Bank, NJ'.
Information regarding this pencil sketch, and the photo of it, were
contributed by the efforts of David M. Buckley of Troy, NY, who acquired the
sketch from an estate, and believes it to be the painting kept by Alexander
Woolcott in his bedroom. Mr. Buckley says:
'I have discovered a W.S.
Bucklin pencil sketch of the Phalanstery of the North American Phalanx. This was
discovered in Albany, NY . [Written on the reverse of the frame is] . .
.'Phalanx Woolcott family home NJ'. It is signed 'W.S. Bucklin "08"'. . .
. After some research I have determined that this scene [may be or is similar
to]...a watercolor done by William Savery and given to the father of Edmund
Wilson, who had it hanging in his stone house in Talcottville, NY. The
watercolor owned by Wilson was titled "Phalanstery at Moonlight" and is depicted
in Wilson's memoirs on the death of Alexander Woolcott, See, The Nation
(1943)."
