William Savory Bucklin
was both commercially successful and also artistically acclaimed during his lifetime
(1851-1928).
William Savory Bucklin painted from the east to the west coasts of the United States, and not only
painted numerous individual pictures, but also produced wall murals for public
spaces and illustrations for magazines.
William Savory Bucklin is also notable for being part of the Bucklin
connection with the historically interesting American Phalanx movement of the 19th century.
William Savery's father - John Bucklin) - was a prime mover in the social
experiment known as the Phalanx movement. William Savery's birthplace and lifelong
residence was in that experimental social community. Read about the New Jersey
Phalanx.
We maintain a biography of William Savery Bucklin ,

We provide photos, with notes, of artistic works of William Savory Bucklin.
This includes the only existing available
listing and images of the extant art work of W.S.Bucklin.

Above is a splendid example of W. S. Bucklin's
paintings. Lovely landscapes, extensive impasto. impressionist styling,
and a "moody" palette typify most of Bucklin's work. "Moody" might be
better described as colors accurately conveying the cloudy light so common along
the northeastern costal states of the United States.
The above oil painting is held by Virginia Berg, who
says: "The painting was in my great aunt and great uncle's home,
at least from 1945 when first saw it." Her statement describes what
is typical history of W.S.Bucklin's paintings during the last century, to wit:
they have been held, usually in the same substantial frame, as a treasured part
of a household, passed down by inheritance to the present day.

Another typical painting by William Savery Bucklin is titled "Spring."
The canvas, containing both oil and watercolor, contains Williams typical signature, shown above at the top of this article, with both the date
of 1900 and "Phalanx" as the apparent date and place where it was painted. The painting
measures approximately 37 3/4" by 28 1/4" and for some time has been
in its present large frame under
glass. The owner, Linda Rausch, received the painting before 1977 from her
grandmother, and states:
"My grandmother originally had four paintings, titled Spring,
Summer, Fall, and Winter. I remember the painting of Summer being about the size
of Spring which is [shown above] ...and as I recall it was as a meadow with a
spring running through it and cows. Fall and Winter were smaller and
unfortunately I don't remember the details. I believe they were all oil and
watercolor however, I'm not positive of that either.. . The one remaining
painting is a treasure to me and it is extremely unfortunate that the others
were lost in the house fire where my grandmother also died July 4th weekend of
1977....[My grandmother's family] the Fairchild family had an appreciation for
his art and wanted to support that by purchasing some of his paintings. The
painting is signed, however I have no idea if there is additional information
under the backing. There are some tiny chips in the oil as it is under glass and
I have never wanted to disturb that for fear of creating an additional problem."
