A page from the family bible Capt.Joseph Bucklin IV bible still exists!
Our research found this torn and barely readable page
tucked away in a folder of documents in the Manuscript Room of the Rhode Island
Historical Society. This is an extraordinarily important historical document for those interested
in the Joseph Bucklin that shot the English captain in the capture of the
English ship Gaspee. We therefore store a copy in our Documentary
Depository and place a reduced and electronically brightened and enhanced copy here for
the easy reference of historians.
From handwriting comparisons, we believe the first six entries, detailing the
children and the death of their mother Zermiah, were written by Capt.
Joseph Bucklin 4th. The last entry shown below, recording the death of
Capt. Joseph, appears to have been added by daughter Anna (also known as Nancy),
the last survivor of the family group.
