George Washington knew Captain Joseph Bucklin at the start of the Revolutionary
War, according to letter of August, 1776.
The United States National Archives has a letter of George Washington that
contains a reference to Captain Joseph Bucklin. (It is
indexed as "George Washington to Nicholas Cooke, August 5, 1776, with reference
to Captain Bucklin.") Here, below is a photograph of the page of that
letter that is of interest to those tracing the
events regarding the attack on the Gaspee and the subsequent Revolutionary War
involvement of the Bucklin family.
Unfortunately, the original document is difficult to ready. The small script,
the spellings of that era, and the fading of the ink, conspire to prevent easy
reading.
Will you do the labor of reading this difficult-to-read document for us, and
send us a typed copy? Or
will you donate the $50 a professional archivist will charge us to provide us with a
typed copy?
