Art Works by William Savery Bucklin
still existing at the start of the 21st
century.
A part of our Bucklin listing of William Savery Bucklin's
paintings, drawings, and sketches are shown
here.

Above is a splendid example of W.S.Bucklin's paintings. Lovely landscapes,
heavy impasto and a moody palette typify most of Bucklin's work. His style
may be described as Impressionism.
The above oil painting is held by Virginia Berg, who says:
"The painting was in my great aunt and great uncle's home, at
least from 1945 when first saw it." Her statement describes what is
typical history of W.S.Bucklin's paintings during the last century, to wit: they have been held,
usually in the same substantial frame, as a treasured part of a household,
passed down by inheritance to the present day.
Will
Kent, an art collector with training in restoration says about his
Nasturtium painting (shown to the left):
"The painting is approx 20" X 24" and it is signed in the lower
right "W.S.Bucklin, Oct. '92". It is a watercolor on paper and the colors are
vibrant in spite of its age. It is a still life of nasturtium in a vessel on a
table with a cloth. I purchased it in an old barn antique (more junk) shop in
Southern New Hampshire in 1982. It was in an original unattractive and damaged
frame, which I replaced some years back. Bucklin's artistry was very apparent,
although the shop had little information about it or him. The colors are more
vibrant than in the photo and the gray background in the photo is more of an off
white in the painting."
Still
another variant of W.S Bucklin's work are the two "murals" he did while in
California (probably about 1925), painting directly on the wallboard of a beach
area cottage. Here is what the present owner says of the painting shown on the
left.
"My father was a finish carpenter from Denmark
who remodeled [in about 1960] a home in Montecito. In this home were two murals
of WS Bucklin - I say murals because they were actually painted on the walls
according to my father My father carefully removed, cut them out, and framed
them. .... From what [my mother]...recalls, the person who contracted my father
for the remodel wanted him to cover the murals. My father liked the paintings
and made a deal with him to let my father provide the wallboard to repair the
holes that his taking the murals out would cause. These paintings are on a
plasterboard type material."

"Cottage
by the Stream" a unique item -- a reverse painting on convex glass, about 9x12 inches.
Owner wishes to remain unknown.
Kristen
M. Thompson has an interesting winter scene. His mother also has a
painting, a lush green setting, as opposed to Kristen's winter landscape. Both
paintings are heavily damaged by humidity. Both paintings came from the estate
of Harry Rich Hale, formerly of Crescent City, FL.
