To understand the work of William Savory Bucklin, one could
start with this painting, titled "Spring, in oil and watercolor. It
contains Williams typical signature, shown above at the top of this article, with both the date
of 1900 and "Phalanx" as the apparent date and place where it was painted. The painting
measures approximately 37 3/4" by 28 1/4" and is placed in a large frame under
glass. The owner, Linda Rausch, received the painting before 1977 from her
grandmother, and states:
"My grandmother originally had four paintings, titled Spring,
Summer, Fall, and Winter. I remember the painting of Summer being about the size
of Spring which is [shown above] ...and as I recall it was as a meadow with a
spring running through it and cows. Fall and Winter were smaller and
unfortunately I don't remember the details. I believe they were all oil and
watercolor however, I'm not positive of that either.. . The one remaining
painting is a treasure to me and it is extremely unfortunate that the others
were lost in the house fire where my grandmother also died July 4th weekend of
1977....[My grandmother's family] the Fairchild family had an appreciation for
his art and wanted to support that by purchasing some of his paintings. The
painting is signed, however I have no idea if there is additional information
under the backing. There are some tiny chips in the oil as it is under glass and
I have never wanted to disturb that for fear of creating an additional problem."
