The Gaspee Raiders.  How can they be put into groups for study?

For ease in discussing individual persons in the attacking group, you might want to consider the following sub groups of persons, such as the following..

bulletThe ship captains who were the  boat captains of the longboats rowed to attack the Gaspee.   There were eight boats from Providence plus one boat that rowed all the way from Bristol, plus one boat from Bristol or its neighbor Warren. ( Bristol was 11 miles of rowing from the attack site).
bulletThe Brown brothers, four prominent merchants who included the attack leader John Brown.
bulletPersons consistently identified by all historians as Americans in the attacking force for what they did: Joseph Bucklin, Ephraim Bowen, and John Mawney. Joseph Bucklin is the person from whom this society is named.  He fired the shot that struck and wounded the English captain, and changed the character of the raid to a clear case of treason and armed revolt from English law..  Ephirm Bowen gave the only clear and comprehensive written account of the events of the raid itself. John Mawney wrote another account, which is the main American source from which we can learn what happened in the English ship's  cabin when Mawney and Joseph Bucklin treated the English captain for his wound.
